1. Be careful not to make a mistake. Don’t wash your turkey prior to cooking it.
The belief is that washing raw turkeys is a way to kill any bacteria which could lead to food poisoning. If you don’t clean the turkey, bacteria may cause a spread of illness to your kitchen. After handling turkeys, everyone must clean their hands at least 20 times. The best way to kill the bacteria present within turkeys is to cook it to the right internal temperature.
2. Don’t make a mistake: Thaw the turkey in the counter
To ensure that your turkey is safe, don’t let it freeze on the counter. Your guests and you can be ill if bacteria can grow in a warm atmosphere.
3. It is a mistake to freeze your turkey in water
You can defrost turkeys in the bowl of water instead of in the refrigerator. But, it is important to change the water every 30 mins. The CDC suggests this in order to keep the turkey healthy and stop harmful bacteria from forming.
4. Don’t let the turkey for longer than 2 hours!
This is one of the most serious turkey mistakes you must be aware of this holiday season. The CDC will say that you have crossed the safety line within two hours. If you leave your turkey out on the counter or in your car for longer than 2 hours, it’s better to take your turkey to a safe place and buy the turkey replaced.
5. Don’t commit mistakes.
You must ensure that the date you purchase fresh turkeys from your local butcher, meat vendor or grocer coincides with the date you plan to cook your Thanksgiving meal. It is essential to cook your turkey as soon as you can in the event that it was fresh. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service states that fresh turkeys should be kept in the fridge for no more than two days.
